The Pickering Public Library is committed to partnering with and supporting our local educational institutions to promote a lifelong love of reading, strong literacy skills, and a connection with the library and community. Currently, the Pickering Public Library offers a set list of class and school visit options which are available to all Pickering schools serving classes from Kindergarten to Grade 8.
To request a class or school visit, please fill out the Class Visit Form below and a staff member will contact you shortly to discuss the visit in more detail. All requests for visits will be approved based on staff availability – we may not be able to accommodate all requests.
To ensure students receive library cards during their class visit, educators are encouraged to print the Library Card Application Form distribute it to all students, and drop off the signed and completed forms to the Central Library at least one week before the scheduled visit. All Library card application forms must be signed by a parent or guardian.
Requests for Library staff to visit school locations are welcome at this time. We currently offer the following types of in-school visits:
Storytime (Kindergarten – Grade 2)
Join us at the library, or have us come to your classroom, to present books, songs, rhymes, and movement, which will get your students excited about literacy! Storytime themes can be tailored to your unit of study or chosen by our knowledgeable staff.
Booktalk (Grades 3-6)
The essentials of a Storytime visit (at the library, or in your classroom), but geared toward students in Grades 3-6. Our staff will work with you to select books and themes of importance to your students as a jumping-off point for interesting discussions and activities.
Digital Library Exploration (Grades 4-8)
Learn how to access your library 24 hours a day! During this visit students will learn about and get a chance to explore eBooks as well as online resources which can meet their educational and leisure needs. This experience can be offered in-person at the school site, virtually through video conferencing, or in-library at the Central Library.
Tech Play (Kindergarten – Grade 8)
Connect students with the broad range of technology-based tools and play based learning the library has to offer. Learn about coding, or take a virtual field trip, with products ranging from Osmos to Augmented Reality.
Outreach at School Events (e.g. Welcome to Kindergarten, Kindergarten Graduation, Caregiver Nights etc.)
Hosting a school event? Invite us to set up a booth to help connect families to all the amazing programs, resources, and services the Library has to offer!
In-Library Experiences
Library Orientation & Tour (at the Central Library or George Ashe Library only) (Kindergarten – Grade 8)
