Library Home Service

Due to COVID-19 impacts and restrictions, this service is currently unavailable. Please check back for on-going updates.

Library Home Service is a free service provided to Pickering residents of all ages who cannot visit the Library due to a temporary or long-term illness or disability.

Library Home Service staff will select books, movies, or music and deliver them to you once a month. We'll even pick them up for you when you're finished.

You can also request items online and a Library Home Service staff will deliver them to you.

Who is eligible for this service?

There are three types of Library Home Service.

Temporary Service - Temporary physical limitations or an illness which prevents an individual from visiting the Library and which will last a minimum of six (6) weeks.

Seasonal Service - Service during the winter months for those who use walkers, scooters, mobility aids, or who otherwise are physically unable visit the library.

Long-Term Service - Ongoing, long-term service for those who are unable to visit the library due to illness, restricted mobility, or a physical, developmental, or visual disability.

What kind of materials can I get?

You can have any of the following materials delivered:

  • Books (Regular and Large Print)
  • Magazines
  • Books on CD
  • CDs
  • DVDs
  • CNIB DAISY Talking Books

If the Library doesn't have the book you're looking for, don't worry! We can borrow it from another library for you!

When you register for the Library Home Service, a staff member will contact you to learn about your reading interests and set up a reading profile for you - you can change this profile at any time.

How often do you deliver?

Items are delivered and picked up once a month on a pre-arranged schedule. If you would like materials more often, you can contact the Library and have items set aside for a friend or family member to pick-up for you.

Once you're done with your materials, you can have a friend or family member return them early or hold on to them until your pre-arranged pick-up time.

Library Home Service clients may borrow items for up to five (5) weeks and will not be charged late fees.

What is a CNIB DAISY Book?

DAISY books are audiobooks that use the international DAISY standard (DAISY stands for Digital Accessible Information SYstem) to provide numerous advantages over regular audiobooks.
DAISY books provide better sound quality as well as extra features to assist those with low vision.
The Library has DAISY Books available to lend through the Library Home Service. All you have to do is ask!

Does the Library lend DAISY players?

Yes! The Library does have DAISY players to lend. They can be borrowed for up to five (5) weeks with a valid Pickering Public Library card.
