The Pickering Local History Collection was founded in 1990 with the opening of the Central Library. The original archival collection came to us from Pickering Museum Village. Since then, the collection has grown from donations and transfers offered by community members, historical societies, and other collecting institutions. Currently, the collection holds both archival and reference materials that document the history of the City of Pickering and former Township of Pickering.
The collection includes:
- Photographs
- Maps
- Land deeds
- Cemetery and genealogical records (death notices, family histories, family trees)
- Local newspapers
- Former Township of Pickering Municipal records
- City of Pickering Municipal records
- Records from Pickering based clubs and organizations
- Artwork
- Scrapbooks
- Historic publications
Items are available for viewing at the Local History Experience Centre located at the Greenwood Heritage Library. To view items, please make an appointment with the Local History Specialist.

Handling Materials
To ensure the proper handling and protection of our archival materials, we ask that:
- Materials are not removed from the Local History Experience Centre.
- Flash photography is prohibited in the Local History Experience Centre.
- Food and beverage are prohibited (water is allowed if the container has a secure lid, and it is kept away from archival materials).
- No marks or alterations are to be made to the materials. When taking notes, we require researchers to use pencils.
- Archival materials are to be handled with two hands and left flat as much as possible.
- The order of the archival materials remains intact.
